Broncos Rock Tigers 9-1 in Five Innings

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – On the final day of the San Jose State Super Series, Santa Clara softball topped Princeton by a final of 9-1 in five innings. The Broncos are now 4-16 on the season while the Tigers are now 2-7.

Santa Clara returns to the field Fri., March 21 at 1 p.m. vs. Princeton in the opener of the Santa Clara Marriott Round Robin.

Jessica Turner (2-6) started for Santa Clara and picked up a win in 5.0 innings. Turner allowed one run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Kelly Scribner was 2-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI to lead the offense. Geenamarie Bonilla was 2-4 with a double, a run scored, and two RBI while Gianetta France was 2-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and a walk.

Claire Klausner (0-2) started for Princeton and picked up a loss in 1.2 innings. Klausner allowed four runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout. Haley Hineman was 1-3 to lead the offense. Kayla Bose added a hit in two at bats while Marissa Reynolds had an RBI.

Stephanie Fisher led off the game with a single to left field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rochelle Rivera. Scribner, Bonilla, and France all followed with RBI doubles to give Santa Clara the quick 3-0 lead.

Danielle Allen led off the bottom of the first with a walk and was able to steal second and third. With one down, Reynolds hit a sacrifice fly to cut the Bronco lead to 3-1 after one inning.

After two quick outs in the top of the second, Rivera singled to left on a 3-2 pitch and Scribner came through with her second RBI double of the day to get Santa Clara back on top by three.

The Broncos added another run in the top of the third. Chiara Biagini singled to left to lead off the inning and Sarah Mosher pinch-ran. After two outs, Mosher moved to second on a wild pitch and Kimberly Goulart singled up the middle to bring in the run.

Breezy Bernard pinch-hit for Jordan Newell to lead off the top of the fifth and singled to right field. Newell reentered to run for Bernard and two singles with one out loaded the bases for Santa Clara. Rivera went down looking but the pitch got away and a run came in to score. Scribner followed by reaching on an error that brought in another run. Bonilla hit an RBI single and France doubled down the left field line to put the Broncos up 9-1.

Turner retired the Tigers in order in the bottom of the fifth to give Santa Clara the win.
