Softball Closes Lobo Classic with Split

ALBUQUEREQUE, N.M. – Wrapping-up a nine-game road trip, Santa Clara softball topped Stony Brook 13-3 in six innings and lost to New Mexico 6-1 Sunday afternoon.

Game 1
The Santa Clara (6-13) offense exploded for a season-high 13 runs and 18 hits against Stony Brook (1-10) in the first game of the day. After putting up a run in the first, the Broncos scored six in the second and three in the fourth and sixth.

In their six-run second inning, the Broncos had their first eight hitters of the inning reach via seven singles and a walk. Stony Brook finally escaped the inning when relief pitcher Maddy Neales struck out the final three batters.

Five Santa Clara players collected multiple hits and four had multiple RBIs. Hannah Russell was 4-for-5 with four RBIs, a run scored, and a double to lead the way. Ellie Fisher was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs and Kimberly Goulart was 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Kelsie Barnard was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Morgan Modesto added a pair of hits and two RBIs as well as a run scored.

Micaela Vierra (3-5) went 4 shutout innings out of the bullpen to pick up the win. She allowed three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

The Seawolves scored their only runs in the bottom of the second. Melissa Rahrich blasted a one-out home run and four singles followed to bring in the next two runs.

Katelyn Corr collected two hits to go with a walk and scored a run. Six other Seawolves had one hit each.

Taylor Pechin (0-2) got the loss in 1-plus inning out of the bullpen. She allowed seven runs on seven hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts.

Game 2
New Mexico (14-10) put up all six of its runs over the first three innings. Starter Tess McPherson no-hit Santa Clara (6-14) for 3 2/3 innings and didn't surrender a run until the sixth.

McPherson (6-4) went the distance to pick up the win. She allowed one run on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Chelsea Johnson knocked three doubles to go with an RBI and a run scored to lead the offense for the Lobos. Michala Erickson had a pair of hits and two RBIs and Shelbie Franc also had an RBI and a run scored.

Barnard was 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Broncos. Fisher, Bonilla, and Taylor Bojorquez each collected a hit and Eleni Spirakis scored a run.

Ciara Gonzales (1-5) started and lasted two innings while picking up the loss. She allowed five runs on nine hits with a strikeout.

Santa Clara returns home beginning Friday for the Santa Clara Round Robin.
