Box Score

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – A familiar face in a new uniform and turnovers cost Santa Clara women's basketball in a 67-57 defeat at Kansas City on Tuesday.

Brooklyn McDavid, formerly of Pacific, led all scorers with 26 points and the Broncos (5-3) committed 22 turnovers that the Roos (10-1) turned into 25 points.

All of Kansas City's points came from their starters with just one shot coming from a reserve. Overall, the Roos shot 48.2-percent from the floor. Naomi Alnatas added 20 points and Paige Bradford scored 10. Mandy Willems (9) and Kiara Bradley (4) rounded out the team's scoring.

Santa Clara never got into much of an offensive groove and finished the day 41.2-percent from the field. The Broncos also struggled from deep, going just 5-of-20. To make matters worse, leading scorer Lindsey VanAllen played only nine minutes after injuring her ankle in the final seconds of the first quarter.

The deficit for Santa Clara stayed within 10 most of the day and was cut to as little as three at 3:36 in the third quarter when Danja Stafford knocked down a jumper to make the score 45-42 but Kansas City responded with a 6-0 run.

The Broncos made another little run late in the game when Bryce Nixon hit a 3-pointer and Lara Edmanson followed with a pair of free throws to make it 63-56 with 1:26 on the clock. The Roos didn't panic and converted at the charity stripe down the stretch to put the game away.

Stafford and Merle Wiehl led Santa Clara with 13 points each while grabbing five and seven rebounds respectively. Edmanson just missed a double-double with a season-high 11 points and nine rebounds.

NOTES

  • Santa Clara is now 0-1 all-time against Kansas City.
  • The Broncos outrebounded the Roos 37-27 and 10-7 on the offensive end.
