Women's Basketball Rolls Past Holy Names in Nonconference Finale

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball cruised to an 88-30 win over Holy Names Monday to close nonconference play. It was tied for the sixth largest win in program history and was the third biggest in Leavey Center.

The Broncos (6-4) took control early and the game was never in doubt, even when the Hawks (0-11) put together some nice stretches on offense in the second half.

Santa Clara dominated in every aspect, shooting 47.4-percent from the field while holding Holy Names to just 25.7-percent. The Broncos forced 33 turnovers while committing 10 and had a 49-5 edge in points off turnovers. They also won the battle of the boards 44-22 and 22-4 on the offensive glass to have a 22-5 edge in second chance points.

The game was all but put away in the second quarter when the Broncos scored the first 25 points to complete a 29-0 run dating back to the first period. They won that period 25-5 and were at it again in the fourth when they had a 26-7 advantage.

Shayley Harris set career-highs with 16 points and eight rebounds, both game-highs. Bryce Nixon also set a career-high with 14 points while dishing out five assists. Lana Hollingsworth scored 12 with five boards and Danja Stafford had 11 points as well. Merle Wiehl rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 and added eight rebounds and tied a career-high with six assists.

The Hawks best quarter was the third when they scored 14 and only committed three turnovers.

Jayden Benitez led the team with 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting. Samantha Lemay-Zambrano added nine while connecting three times from downtown and Chantel Williams pulled down a team-high five rebounds.

NOTES

  • Santa Clara is now 1-0 all-time against Holy Names.
  • The Broncos collected 26 assists on their 36 made baskets.
  • Emma Ellinghouse made her collegiate debut and scored four points with three rebounds.
  • All 12 healthy players saw time in the game.
  • The Broncos were without Lindsey VanAllen who suffered an ankle injury at Kansas City and Lexie Pritchard who was injured at Long Beach State. A timetable for their returns is uncertain. Ashlee Maldonado is also out and will miss the entire season.
