Softball Splits Against San Diego on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball and San Diego each won in shutout fashion to split the doubleheader on Saturday in a West Coast Conference matchup at SCU Softball Stadium.

San Diego took the first game 7-0 and Santa Clara came back with a 2-0 victory in the backend of the twin bill.

GAME 1: San Diego 7 - Santa Clara 0
Courtney Rose tossed a two-hit shutout and the Torero bats collected 15 hits in San Diego's 7-0 win in the opener.

Ashley Daugherty hit a two-run home run against Broncos starter Sage Hager in the third inning as that's all the scoring the Toreros would need behind the strong outing by Rose (7-12) who threw 124 pitches over seven frames, struck out nine and walked five.

San Diego (20-32, 5-7 WCC) added a run in the fifth to go up 3-0 and blew the game open with a four-run seventh.

Alexia Torculas led all hitters going 3-for-5 while four other Toreros had multiple hits.

Hager also went the distance, giving up seven runs, a walk and two strikeouts over seven innings.

Ashley Trierweiler and Abigail Charpentier had the lone hits for the Broncos (18-28, 4-6 WCC).

GAME 2: Santa Clara 1 - San Diego 0
Santa Clara (19-28, 5-6) starting pitcher Hannah Edwards returned the favor in the second game with a shutout of her own, scattering two hits and one walk in an economical outing.  The redshirt freshman hurler threw just 70 pitches to improve to 7-8 on the year.

The lone run of the game came in the opening frame when Sammy Needham tripled to the right center gap to plate Lauren LaHood who drew a walk.

USD starter Daugherty allowed only two other hits, to Trierweiler and Cameron McGinnis, but came out on the losing end to drop her season record to 1-10.

San Diego (20-33, 5-8) had their best scoring opportunity in the top of the third when they had their only two hits of the game.  Sofia Delgado led the inning off with a single but was thrown out after successfully moving to second on a sacrifice bunt but was back picked.  With the bases empty, Torculas followed with a triple before being stranded there when Edwards got Daugherty to fly out.
