Late Rally Sinks Baseball on Senior Day

Box Score

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A late rally stung Santa Clara baseball as Portland finished a three-game sweep with a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon.

The deciding inning was the eighth as the Pilots (26-17, 13-8 WCC) scored three times to take their first lead of the day. With a run already in, a wild pitch proved costly as it moved runners to second and third. Nich Klemp followed with a single through the left side. There looked to be a chance at the back runner but a bobble in left allowed the go-ahead run to come in without a play at the plate.

The inning ruined a big-time start from Skylar Hales. Hales shutdown the Portland offense over 6 innings of work, allowing a run on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts but ended up with a no-decision.

Alex Reelfs surrendered the runs and took the loss. In all, Reelfs (4-6) went 2 1/3 innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits.

The Broncos (23-22, 11-13 WCC) got a two-out pinch hit double from Efrain Manzo in the ninth and he got to third on a wild pitch but was stranded.

The offense was paced by Eamonn Lance who went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and Coleman Brigman who had a double and two RBIs. Matt Jew extended his on-base streak to 16 games with a double.

Eli Morse started and went 6 2/3 for Portland and also got a no-decision. He allowed three runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts. Peter Allegro (4-1) got the final seven outs, surrendering just one hit, to get the win out of the bullpen.
