Pepperdine Topples Volleyball to Extend Winning Streak

MALIBU, Calif. — The Santa Clara University volleyball team ran into a hot Pepperdine squad on the road Thursday. The Waves extended the nation's ninth-longest winning streak to 10 matches with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-16) West Coast Conference sweep over the Broncos at Firestone Fieldhouse.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Santa Clara (9-9, 1-5 WCC) scored the first point of the match to lead 1-0 in the first set, but that was the only lead it'd hold all night. The Broncos stayed close early in the first set, making it 7-6 on a kill from Lauren Grover, who got her second start of the season. The Waves pulled away with a 7-2 run to lead by six at 14-8, and they wouldn't lead by any less than four the rest of the way as they won the opening frame, 25-18.

  • The Waves came out on fire in the second set, running out to 8-0 and 12-2 leads with surgical precision. Pepperdine had eight kills and two aces in those first 12 points of the second set. The Pepperdine defense was also strong in the second, holding Santa Clara to just .095 hitting.

  • Santa Clara pushed the Waves in set three. The Broncos made it a one-point game at 15-14 on a kill from Oren Abutbul, one of her team-leading 14 kills on the night. But the Waves made sure they locked down the victory, going on a 10-2 run to close out the set and the match. That run included a 6-0 stretch in which the Waves had four kills from Grace Chillingworth and an ace from Riley Patterson.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • .515: Chillingworth led all players Thursday with 18 kills while also hitting .515. Her teammate Meg Brown had 12 kills while hitting .625. The Waves hit .375 as a team in the match.
  • 23: Kat Georgiadis set a season high and led all players with 23 digs. It was her second 20-digs match of the season after having 22 against California Baptist on Aug. 25.
