Men's Soccer Comeback Bid Falls Short to No. 17 Georgetown in Season Opener

The Broncos came back from a two goal deficit to tie the match but lose 3-2 at home on Thursday.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer erased a two goal deficit in the second half on a pair of Caden Buckley goals to level the match but Jacob Murrell scored the go-ahead goal a few minutes after to lift No. 17 Georgetown to a 3-2 win at Stevens Stadium on Thursday night. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Georgetown (1-0) scored two goals in the first 19 minutes including one by Kyle Linhares just 13 seconds into the match on a long assist from Max Viera that split the Broncos (0-1) defense. 
  • The Hoyas added another goal in the 19th minute on a turnover inside the box that Jacob Murrell took advantage of. 
  • The second half saw a flurry of action in a three minute span where a total of three goals were scored.
  • In the 79th minute, Buckley tallied two goals within 34 seconds to tie the game.  Jesse Anamoo assisted in both goals with another assist credited to Yoni Aidlberg for the second goal.
  • Two minutes later, in the 81st minute, Murrell scored his second goal of the day to put the Hoyas up for good. 
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • The goal by Linhares 13 seconds into the match was the 21st fastest goal scored in NCAA history. 
  • Both teams had 11 shots each with each goalkeeper credited with three saves each.
  • Georgetown had a sizable advantage in corner kicks 14 to 2. 
  • Freshman Will Wiersdorf and Jack Civitts plus junior transfer Brennan Mallett started their first games as a Bronco. 
  • Freshman Keagan Rhodes, Martin Kwende Jr. and Aidlberg along with junior transfer Noah Bohane came off the bench to see their first action as a Bronco.
