Freshmen Excel On Day One Of USF/Howard Intercollegiate

SAN FRANCISCO - Freshmen men's golfers J.P. Odland and Jeffrey Kwak signed with Santa Clara as two of the top high school players in the state of California, and on Monday, the duo backed up that high ranking. The pair turned in the top two rounds of day at the USF/Howard Intercollegiate with Kwak scoring a 7-under 65 in the opening round and Odland posting a 6-under 66 in the second. Odland is tied for the individual lead overall at 9-under 69-66--135. Santa Clara as a team finished the day in third at 14-under 280-282--562.

ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Kwak, who is playing as an individual, got things started on a high note with his opening round 65, which is the lowest round by any Bronco so far this early season. The La Mirada native was nearly flawless in the round with eight birdies against just one bogey. He rolled in three-straight birdies to open the back nine.
  • Kwak couldn't quite sustain the success in the second round, carding a 2-over 74, but the freshman still finds himself in line for a top-10 finish at 5-under 139, currently tied for seventh.
  • Odland shot in the 60s in both rounds, opening the day with a 3-under 69, before really finding his rhythm in the second round. The Tiburon, Calif. product was on fire from start to finish with a whopping 10 birdies in the round for a season-low 66. His play shot him up the leaderboard into a tie for first with LMU's Riley Lewis.
  • Nolan Forsman also had an outstanding opening round of 4-under 68 and is currently tied for 13th at 4-under 68-72--140.
  • Joey Hayden and Muzzy Donohue finished the day at even par to tie for 28th while Calder Overfelt is tied for 43rd at 3-over 73-74--147.
  • The Broncos are just three strokes behind San Francisco (559) for second place and nine back from the day one leader LMU (553).
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Donohue, a graduate transfer from Boston College, made his first appearance in the Broncos starting lineup after playing as an individual in his Santa Clara debut last week.
  • The Broncos' 36 hole total is their best of the year.
