NAPA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's golf sophomore
Matt Robles shot under par in both rounds on the opening day of the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational, turning in a 3-under and 5-under to finish the day in sole possession of third place at 8-under 69-67--136. He enters Tuesday's final round just four strokes off of the lead. The Broncos sit in fifth as a team after carding 12-under 278-286--564 at the par-72, 6,859-yard Silverado Country Club.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- Santa Clara shot 10-under par in the opening round - the fourth-lowest round of the day among the 14-team field.
- Robles began the day with a 3-under 69 to featured four birdies and just one bogey. He followed up by turning in seven birdies against a pair of bogeys in the second round.
- Robles now has a team-high 13 rounds under par on the season.
- Calder Overfelt is tied for 18th at 2-under 142. He carded nine combined birdies over Monday's two rounds with a 2-under 70 in the opening round and shot even par in the second.
- Freshman Tucker Sweeney, fresh off his second individual title of the season, also shot 2-under 142 to tie with Overfelt in 18th. He tallied seven combined birdies on the day.
- Emil Nielsen, playing as an individual, also shot 2-under 70 in the opening round and is tied for 42nd at 1-over 70-75--145 in total.
- J.P. Odland and Kevin Hollomon are tied for 52nd at 3-over 147. Odland had a 3-under 69 in the opening round for his team-best ninth round in the 60s on the season.
- No. 27 BYU leads the field at 28-under 548 where they are led by top-50 player Kihei Akina, who holds a four-stroke lead individually at 12-under 132.
