Wiersdorf Scores First Career Goal in Men's Soccer Draw Against CSU Bakersfield

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer freshman Will Wiersdorf collected his first career goal in the first half but CSU Bakersfield answered with a goal in the back half in the 1-all draw on Thursday night at Stevens Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • For the third-straight game, the Broncos (1-5-2) got on the board first, courtesy of Wiersdorf on an assist from Tyrone Kirunda.  Kirunda slid the ball across the top of the box where Wiersdorf took one dribble inside the 18 and finished with his left foot past the diving Roadrunners goalkeeper Brandon Limes to the far post to give the Broncos a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute.
  • Santa Clara was on their front foot for much of the opening half outshooting CSU Bakersfield 5-3 and entered the intermission with a 1-0 lead.
  • CSU Bakersfield (4-1-3) took five shots in the second half and finally broke through in the 67th minute.  Bryson Hankins blasted a shot from 35 yards out that dipped over the outstretched arms of Broncos 6-foot-6 goalkeeper Jack Stoecker just getting under the crossbar.
  • The Broncos had a great chance to score in the final minute of the match getting off two shots but Dabora's was saved by Limes and the second one was blocked by a Roadrunner defender as time ran out.
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • 2: The assist by Kirunda on Wiersdorf's goal was his second of the season.
  • 3: All three of Josh Dabora's shots were on frame.
  • 6: Goalkeeper Jack Stoecker made his first start of the season and was credited with six saves.
