No. 8 Women's Soccer Stays Perfect With Win Over James Madison

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The eighth-ranked Santa Clara women's soccer team stayed perfect with a 2-1 win over James Madison on Sunday afternoon from Stevens Stadium. An early goal put the Broncos on top and, after a late tally in the first half for the Dukes, another early in the second half proved to be the game-winner.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The scoring got started right away. Sally Menti took a free kick from right on the edge of the box and blasted it inside the right post.
  • The Dukes (2-2-2) almost evened things up in the 35th minute when goalkeeper Kylie Foutch was called for a foul in the box but she was able to stop Sophia Verrecchia's ensuing attempt from the spot.
  • James Madison did get one back right before halftime when Suwaibatu Mohammed ran down a long ball and flipped it over the on-coming goalkeeper and knocked it in.
  • Less than two minutes into the second half the Broncos (6-0) took the lead back for good. Sally Menti slid a pass to Farrah Walters who snuck one to Lucy Mitchell and she was able to slide and finish the chance.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara held an 11-4 edge in shots and had an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Broncos also drew nine corners to four for James Madison.
  • Foutch ended the game with a pair of saves. Alexandra Blom collected six saves on the other side.
