STOCKTON, Calif. — Host Pacific's recent hot streak continued Saturday afternoon, as the Tigers took down the Santa Clara University volleyball team in straight sets, 3-0 (25-15, 27-25, 25-13), in a West Coast Conference matchup at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Tigers (10-5, 2-1 WCC) jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first set and never looked back. Pacific held the Broncos (9-6, 1-2 WCC) to .000 hitting in the opening frame, while only committing one attack error itself.
Â
- Pacific still didn't trail to start the second set and had its sights set on an easy 2-0 match lead, but not before the Broncos' offense came to life. The Tigers were leading 16-12 when Santa Clara took off on a 5-0 run that gave it its first lead of the day at 17-16. From there, the teams had seven tie scores, not separating by more than two points.
Â
- Tied 24-24 in the second set, the teams traded service errors to make it 25-25. Then, back-to-back blocks by the Tigers clinched the set by the narrowest of margins in extra points, 27-25.
Â
- Pacific left no doubt in the third set. The Tigers hit .609 in the final set with 15 team kills and only one error. They limited the Broncos to only seven kills in the third and a .250 hitting percentage. A 7-2 run to start the set, followed by a 7-1 stretch that made it 14-4, and scoring three of the set's final four points made for a 25-13 difference in the third.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- 5: Five different Broncos notched multiple kills Saturday, led by Layla Truitt's team-high nine.
- 15: Kat Georgiadis led all players with 15 digs. She also added a service ace.
POST-MATCH QUOTES
Head Coach Erin Lindsey
- We really lost the serve and pass battle today. We went in with a plan to be really aggressive both from the service line and in attacking. We had too many errors in the first set, but I was happy with our determination.
Â
- We started to smooth out our passing in the second (set) to push it to extra points and just didn't come through on a couple opportunities at the end. The third was really challenging us with both too many errors from the service line and not enough passing in system to get our hitters going.
Â
- We will get back to it on Monday to improve this part of the game and be prepared to take it to the (San Diego) Toreros on Thursday.
NEXT UP
- The Broncos' first WCC road trip of the season continues Thursday with a trip to San Diego. They return home on Saturday against Saint Mary's to host their "Alumni Recognition Day." Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
