Wiersdorf Scores, Ozburn Posts Shutout in Men's Soccer Victory over Gonzaga

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer put the offensive pressure often and early against Gonzaga with three shots on frame in the opening 10 minutes before Will Wiersdorf broke through with a goal in the 50th minute for the lone tally of the match.  Jackson Ozburn earned his first clean sheet of his career in the Broncos 1-0 victory in a West Coast Conference game on Wednesday night.   
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • Santa Clara (5-6-3, 2-2-2 WCC) won their second straight match to pull to .500 in league play.  
  • Wiersdorf scored off a quick start pass from Alvaro Gironda early in the second half.  The pass caught the Gonzaga (6-8-2, 0-6-0 WCC) defenders by surprise as many had their backs turned against the ball when Gironda delivered it to Wiersdorf inside the 18 before finding the back of the net from six yards out.  
  • Gonzaga goalkeeper Chema Preciado had four saves, all coming in the first half, but was unable to make another against the Broncos quick start and strike. 
  • Preciado's counterpart, Jackson Ozburn started his second straight game between the posts and recorded a three save shutout performance for Santa Clara.  
NOTABLE NUMBERS / GAME NOTES: 
  • Santa Clara leads the series 19-7-6.   
  • The Broncos have an eight-game unbeaten streak against the Bulldogs since 2017 going 5-0-3 in that span.
  • It was Wiersdorf's third goal of the season, tying him for second on the team along with Florian Deletioglu. 
  • The assist was Gironda's first of his career for the graduate student playing in his first season with the Broncos.  
  • SCU outshot Gonzaga 10-8 but the Bulldogs had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
