Men's Soccer Concedes Goal in Final Minute in Heartbreaker to LMU on Senior Night

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara men's soccer lost in heartbreaking fashion to LMU conceding the lone goal of the match with just 38 seconds remaining on the clock in a hard fought West Coast Conference battle on Saturday night at Stevens Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game appeared destined for a goalless draw but Daniel Idiakhoa scored when he chipped the ball over the diving Bronco goalkeeper Jack Stoecker for the game winner.  Defender Naji Elder made a valiant attempt to clear the ball but could only get his foot on it after the ball had crossed the goal line.  On the play, LMU's goal kick was flicked on by Mydas Smalls at midfield that Alvaro Gironda attempted to clear but ended up at the feet of Idiakhoa who dribbled from about 30 yards out all the way to the six before finding the back of the net.
  • Up to that point, despite the lack of scoring, it was an entertaining game that saw one nullified goal by Santa Clara, two LMU shots that found the woodwork, a total of 39 fouls and eight cautions.
  • In the 66th minute, Elder appeared to break the scoreless deadlock with a header shot but was called for a pushing foul that nullified the goal.
  • LMU (6-7-3, 3-3-1 WCC) had a golden opportunity in the 75th minute when Smalls' shot hit the crossbar, bounced directly down but did that break the goal line.
  • With the loss, Santa Clara (5-7-3, 2-3-2 WCC) dropped to sixth place in the conference standings with eight points while LMU moved up to fifth with 10 points.
