Battle Between No. 10 Women's Soccer and No. 15 Pepperdine Ends in Draw

MALIBU, Calif. – In a battle of the top two teams in the WCC Preseason Poll, No. 10 Santa Clara played to a 1-1 draw at No. 15 Pepperdine. The Broncos (8-2-2, 2-0-1 WCC) got on the board early with the Waves (8-2-3, 2-0-1 WCC) scoring late in the half. The second half saw Santa Clara post some great chances but they were unable to find the winner.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Things got going in the sixth minute. A cross was punched out by the Pepperdine keeper that bounced to Lucy Mitchell and she knocked it off the hop and under the cross bar to make it 1-0.
  • The Waves tied it in the 41st. A cross bounced off the legs of a Bronco defender and went to Ariana Salvador who got it inside the left post.
  • Santa Clara earned a penalty kick in the 53rd minute but Kat Jordan sent the shot wide of the right post.
  • The Broncos had another great chance in the 74th when Tori Powell got a one-on-one with the keeper with a defender on her back but the chance was saved.
  • In the waning seconds, a ball into the box was headed to the six-yard box and Marissa Bubnis put on target but it was right at the goalkeeper.
 
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara outshot Pepperdine 8-5 and 5-3 in shots on target.
  • Marlee Nicolos made two saves while Jillian Medvecky had four for the Waves.
  • The Broncos now have a six-match unbeaten streak against Pepperdine. They are 5-0-1 dating back to 2019.
