LOS ANGELES — Kaya Ingram scored a team-high 13 points off the bench and two other Broncos scored in double figures, but No. 3/3-ranked and host USC turned it on in the second half to pull away from the Santa Clara University women's basketball team and win, 81-50, in a non-conference game at the Galen Center.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Santa Clara (2-1) was within two points of No. 3/3 USC (4-0) midway through the first quarter at 11-9, but the Trojans grabbed their first double-digit lead of the afternoon with an 11-0 run that made it 22-9.
Â
- The Broncos would pull within single digits of USC again in the second period. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Alana Goodchild made it a seven-point game, but again a 9-0 spurt put the Trojans up by 16 at 39-23, and their lead wouldn't fall under double digits for the rest of the game.
Â
- Goodchild had a career day at the Galen Center. Her 10 points – all off the bench – were a career high. She also tied a career best with two assists (also had two on Saturday at Fresno State). Ingram scored 13 with a 3-pointer, two rebounds and an assist. Olivia Pollerd was the Broncos' third double-digit scorer with 12 points, three rebounds and two assists. Hannah Rapp had a game-high eight rebounds
Â
- JuJu Watkins, the all-everything freshman on the national stage a year ago, not only scored a game-high 22 points, but also played big roles in each of those key first-half runs for the Trojans. She had an and-one, three-point play during USC's 11-0 first quarter run, then scored seven of the Trojans' nine points in that second quarter, 9-0 spurt.
Â
- Kiki Iriafen gave USC two 20-point scorers with 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting and a team-high seven rebounds. Talia von Oelhoffen guided the Trojans' offense with a game-leading six assists.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- 23: USC forced the Broncos into 23 turnovers, and turned those into 31 points.
- 23: Santa Clara got nearly half its points from its bench. Goodchild and Ingram combined to score 23 points in 50 total minutes of playing time for the Broncos.
