Women's Basketball Opens Season With Win Over UC Riverside

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The season began with a 73-60 win for Santa Clara women's basketball Monday night against UC Riverside. The Broncos (1-0) built a nice lead in the first and led by for all but two and half minutes while getting double-figure points from four different players. The Highlanders (0-1) made things interesting in the fourth but ran out of time.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Santa Clara built a bit of a lead in the first quarter with a 9-2 run, highlighted by five in a row from Olivia Pollerd and following a triple from Pollerd, led 19-11 at the first break.
  • The Highlanders turned things around with the first 10 of the second quarter to take a 21-19 lead at the 6:46 mark. The Broncos followed with a 15-4 run to end the period, including the final six of the half, to take a 34-25 lead into the locker rooms.
  • Santa Clara came out of the half hot, scoring the first 10 points to stretch the lead to 19. Riverside fought back a bit and got within 54-39 after the quarter.
  • Another fast start to the fourth saw the Broncos lead grow to a game-high 21 early in the period but Riverside had an answer, coming back with the next nine points to get within 63-51 at the midway point. The Highlanders would twice cut the deficit to 11 but the Broncos wouldn't let them get any closer.
 
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara shot 54.0-percent (27-of-50) from the floor overall, including 15-of-25 in the second half, and went 7-of-16 from downtown. The Broncos were 12-of-14 from the free throw line as well.
  • Riverside shot 43.6-percent (24-of-55) from the field and was 5-of-15 from beyond the arc.
  • Santa Clara had 20 assists on 20 made baskets.
  • Olivia Pollerd led all scorers with 21 points while connecting on five 3-pointers. She also added seven rebounds and three assists. Georgia Grigoropoulou scored a career-high 14 on 7-of-8 shooting and pulled down five boards with a career-best four assists. Malia Latu set her Santa Clara career-high with 11 points and Kaya Ingram scored 10 while going a perfect 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.
  • Shelley Duchemin was the only Highlander in double-figures with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting and had five rebounds. Esther Matarrranz had a team-high seven rebounds to go with seven points.
