FRESNO, Calif. – For the second-straight day at the Fresno State Kickoff Classic, Santa Clara softball split their games winning the morning game 7-3 over CSU Bakersfield and falling in the afternoon game 3-1 to host Fresno State. The Broncos finished 2-3 during their three days at the season opening tournament.
GAME 1: Santa Clara 7 - CSU Bakersfield 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Santa Clara (2-2) collected 10 hits to back up the solid pitching by starter Hannah Edwards and reliever Avery Seva in the 7-3 win over CSU Bakersfield (0-3)
- Nine Broncos had a hit as SCU put up five runs in the first two innings to take an early 5-0 lead.
- The 3-4-5 hitters of Morgan Salmon, Marie Martorella and Taryn Clements drove in a combined five runs.
- Edwards (1-0) allowed one run over four innings to earn the win while Seva tossed the final three frames to pick up her first career save.
- Carter Thornson (0-2) gave up eight hits, seven runs, only earned, in four innings to take the loss.
NOTABLE NUMBERS / GAME NOTES:
- Freshmen Kyla Acres and Caitlyn "Red" Golob each recorded their first career hits.
GAME 2: Fresno State 3 - Santa Clara 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Fresno State defeated Santa Clara 3-1 behind three pitchers who combined to allow one run on five hits.
- The Bulldogs (4-1) took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning on Kennedy Bunker's 2-RBI double off starter Hazyl Gray.
- SCU (2-3) cut the lead in half on Marie Martorella's RBI in the top of the third but the Bulldogs regained their two run lead when Lauren Almeida singled in a run in the home half of the inning.
- Bunker and Almeida had two hits apiece for the Bulldogs.
- Taylor Gilmore (2-1) tossed five innings and gave up one run and struck out five for the win. Serayah Neiss threw two scoreless innings for the save.
NEXT UP:
- Santa Clara and San José State co-hosts the Silicon Valley Classic I Tournament starting Thursday. A total of nine games, including five Bronco games, will be played at SCU Softball Stadium during the four-day tournament.
