SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball split their two games in the home opener on the first day of the Silicon Valley Classic I Tournament, falling to Nevada 12-5 in the first game and taking down Cal Poly 6-4 in the second game.
GAME 1: Nevada 12 - Santa Clara 5
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A pair of five-run innings by Nevada (4-2) doomed Santa Clara (2-4) as the Wolfpack collected 15 total hits.
- Haley Painter had a pair of two-run home runs and was one of five Nevada players to get multi-hits.
- Chelie Senini and Aaliyah Jenkins each had three hits apiece.
- Nevada scored five runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead but the Broncos got to within a run on Morgan Salmon's three-run homer, however, the Wolfpack came back with five more runs in the top half of the fourth to take a commanding 10-4 lead.
- Carley Brown (2-0) went five innings and gave up five runs, three earned on six hits to pick up with win.
- Hazyl Gray (0-3) took the loss giving up five runs, three earned over three innings.
- Salmon and Cairah Curran combined for five of the seven Bronco hits. Curran also scored three runs and stole a pair of bases while Salmon had three hits and drove in four runs in the loss.
GAME 2: Santa Clara 6 - Cal Poly 4
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Santa Clara (3-4) scored three runs in the home half of the opening frame and never looked back.
- Facing Cal Poly starter Kate Judy, Morgan Salmon singled home two runs and Hazyl Gray had a sacrifice fly RBI to take a quick 3-1 lead. Judy only lasted four batters before being pulled and took the loss to drop her record to 2-1.
- Meanwhile, Bronco starter Hannah Edwards (2-0) went 5 1/3 innings and gave up eight hits, four runs although just two were earned.
- In the top of the sixth, after Caroline Allman's RBI single to get the Mustangs (5-1) within two runs, Alaina Valdez came in relief of Edwards with the bases loaded and two outs. Valdez faced the top of the lineup but got Juju Sargent to fly out to shallow center and Jessica Clements to line out to center to escape the jam. In the seventh, Cal Poly went three up and three down as Valdez picked up her first save as a Bronco.
- Cairah Curran and Salmon combined to go 5-for-8 with four RBIs.
