Softball Picks Up a Win on Second Day of Silicon Valley Classic I Tournament

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball played two games on the second day of the Silicon Valley Classic I Tournament beating Portland State 5-3 and losing to Fordham 3-1.

GAME 1: Santa Clara 5 - Portland State 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara (4-4) grabbed a quick lead scoring four runs in the first two innings and held onto a 5-3 win over Portland State.
  • In the opening frame, Marie Martorella's sacrifice fly plated Bailey McLaughlin for the first run.  The next inning, McLaughlin's bases loaded single along with a throwing error by the centerfielder cleared the bases to knock out Vikings starter Sherri Nakoa-Chung.
  • Portland State (1-6) scored three runs in the fourth on doubles by Lorraine Alo and Maddie Thompson to get within a run at 4-3 but the Broncos added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single by Cairah Curran.
  • Hannah Edwards picked up her third win of the season (3-0) giving up one run in 2 2/3 innings of relief of starter Sage Hager who went three innings.  Hazyl Gray pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to earn her first save of the season.
  • Curran and McLaughlin each went 2-for-4.  Thompson and Logan Riggenbach also had a pair of hits for the Vikings.
  • Nakoa-Chung (1-1) took the loss allowing four runs but just one earned in her 1 2/3 innings of work.

GAME 2: Fordham 3 - Santa Clara 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara freshman pitcher Avery Seva went toe-to-toe with Fordham starting pitcher Devon Miller but came up on the short end.
  • Miller tossed a four-hit complete game, giving up just one run as the two hurlers had their teams in a 1-all tie heading into the seventh.
  • In the seventh, Seva gave up a double to Gianna Sarlo and issued two walks to load the bases before giving way to Alaina Valdez with two outs. A day earlier, Valdez entered the game against Cal Poly in a similar situation but escaped a one out bases loaded jam.  But it was a different story on Friday when Valdez allowed a single to Sydney Wells that scored the go-ahead runs.
  • Seva's final line was three hits, three runs, all earned over 6 2/3 innings.  She struck out four and walked four.
NEXT UP:
  • Santa Clara plays on Saturday against Seattle at 12:30 p.m.
