SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara softball team's comeback bid fell just short, nearly overcoming a four-run deficit in the final two innings, losing to Seattle 5-4 on the final day at the four-day Silicon Valley Classic I Tournament. Despite the threatening weather over the weekend all nine scheduled games were played with the Broncos going 2-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Santa Clara (4-6) trailed 5-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth but put up a pair of runs including a solo home run by Abigail Charpentier to cut the deficit to 5-3. In the seventh inning, Rebecca Rubio doubled home Ella Romero who led the inning off with a two-base hit to get within a run with the potential game-tying run in scoring position. However, Seattle starter Stefanie Madrigal (2-2) hunkered down to strike out pinch-hitter Taryn Clements and got Hazyl Gray to ground out to second on a nice play by Lily Garcia, to earn her second win of the season.
- In her complete game effort, Madrigal allowed five hits, four runs, just one earned, walked one and struck out four.
- Seattle (4-5) banged out 12 hits against a trio of Bronco pitchers with Tai Wilson and Ava Sin each going 3-for-4. Five different Redhawk batters drove in a run including three against Broncos starter Hannah Edwards.
- Edwards (3-1) was pulled after giving up three runs on six hits through 2 1/3 innings to suffer her first loss of the season.
NOTABLE NUMBERS / GAME NOTES:
- Mariah Montalvo saw her first action of the year, starting at third and got a hit.
NEXT UP:
- Santa Clara heads to Las Vegas to play five games at the UNLV Tournament from Friday to Sunday.
