Bats Power Softball Past Southern Utah in Extras

LAS VEGAS – Santa Clara softball scored five runs in the eighth inning and powered past Southern Utah 13-8 on the final day at the UNLV Rebel Classic on Sunday. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara (7-8) tallied a season-high 13 runs on 17 hits with of those five runs coming in the extra inning after Southern Utah (7-8) tied things up in the home half of the seventh. 
  • Five Broncos had multi-hit games including a trio - Cairah Curran, Hazyl Gray and Bailey McLaughlin - with three hits.  SCU also had multi-RBI games from four players, led by McLaughlin who had a career-high four RBIs. 
  • The Broncos had a three-run lead heading to the bottom of the seventh inning but Emily Gonzalez hit a 2-run home run followed by a solo shot by Ariyana Miranda to knot the game up at 8-all.  Avery Seva came in relief of Hannah Edwards and shut the door on the Thunderbirds. 
  • In the eighth, the Broncos scored their first run on an error and the floodgates opened as McLaughlin singled up the middle with runners in scoring position to push the lead out to 11-8.  Taryn Clements and Curran also added an RBI in the frame.  All the runs were scored against Delaney Baker (1-3). 
  • Seva (2-3) picked up the win tossing two scoreless innings. 
  • Gonzalez and Miranda combined to drive in five of the eight runs for Southern Utah. 
NEXT UP:
  • Santa Clara plays five games at the Sacramento State/UC Davis Tournament next weekend.
