Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Santa Clara softball team was scheduled to play a doubleheader against Sacramento State on Friday at the Capital Classic tournament but they were only able to complete the first game, a 7-5 win, as the second game was halted due to rain at the end of the fourth inning tied at 1-all. Since it did not meet the requisite innings played to be an official game (five full or four and half if the home team is leading), it was canceled. The second game and the associated statistics will not count.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Leiora Davidson hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to lift Santa Clara to a 7-5 extra inning victory over Sacramento State in the first game of the planned doubleheader. It was the third-straight extra inning game for the Broncos who are 2-1 in that span.
- The game featured two brief rain delays.
- Sacramento State (8-6) sent the game to extra innings erasing a three-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh on RBIs from the Parish sisters. The Hornets loaded the bases on a single and a pair of walks by Broncos reliever Sage Hager. Samantha Parish got a run across on an RBI grounder and Alexis Parish followed with a 2-RBI triple to knot the game up at 5-all. With the potential game-winning run at third, Hager retired the next two batters.
- Playing under the international tiebreak rules where a runner was placed on second to start each half of the extra inning, only the Broncos were able to take advantage of it in the ninth.
- In the two extra frames, Hager was able to maneuver around and retired six-straight batters to strand the runner in scoring position. In 3 2/3 innings, Hager (2-0) allowed three runs, two hits, walked two and struck out one to pick up her second win of the season.
- Meanwhile, Marissa Bertuccio (3-2) was saddled with the loss giving up the home run to Davidson.
- The top half of the lineup had seven of the eight Bronco hits led by Morgan Salmon who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
- Broncos starter Avery Seva had a solid outing. She scattered seven hits, walked three, struck out two and allowed two runs over 5 1/3 innings before giving way to Hager.
- Three Hornets had two hits and Alexis Parish and Nikki Barboza collected two RBIs each.
NEXT UP:
- Santa Clara will change venues and head to Davis, California on Saturday to face UC Santa Barbara at 11:30 a.m. and UC Davis at 2 p.m. on day two of the Capital Classic.
