SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball player
Cairah Curran was named to the American Samoa National Women's Team on Friday as the team seeks to qualify for the 2028 Summer Olympics Games in Los Angeles.
Back in early April, the American Samoa Softball Association (ASA) revealed the 42-player athlete pool that included Curran, to officially begin their journey toward qualification for the Games. Led by Mississippi State head coach Samantha Ricketts, they had their training camp this past week where Curran made the 20-player roster to comprise the first-ever national team from American Samoa.
The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) National Teams will have the opportunity to qualify for the LA28 Games through five international tournaments. The United States, as the host country, is guaranteed one spot as American Samoa will vie for one of the remaining five spots in the Games.
The American Samoa squad will participate in the WBSC sanctioned 2026 Canada Cup Women's International Softball Championship in Surrey, British Columbia from July 6-12.
This spring, Curran was named All-West Coast Conference for the third straight season. The Ewa Beach, Hawaii native, was second team and WCC Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman in 2024 and was first team and WCC Player of the Year as a sophomore. This season, the Bronco table setter hitting from her customary leadoff spot, was named second team after hitting .347 starting in all 51 games. She finished top-10 in the conference in at-bats (170), hits (59), runs (34), triples (4) and stolen base (28). Defensively, the second baseman, tied for second in double plays turned with 17.
