HENDERSON, Nev. - Santa Clara men's golf had an outstanding day on the links in the opening round of the Lake Las Vegas Intercollegiate, turning in a 10-under 278 to finish the day just one shot back of the lead. Four of the five Broncos playing the field carded sub-par rounds led by a 4-under 68 from
Jeffrey Kwak that sees him tied for fifth place.
ROUND HIGHLIGHTS:
- In addition to Kwak, Calder Overfelt, Muzzy Donohue and J.P. Odland each turned in a 1-under or better on Monday and find themselves in the top-30 of the standings.
- Kwak rolled in four birdies on the back nine and two more on the front as part of his 4-under afternoon. He is just two shots back from the individual lead.
- Overfelt is also in the top-10 after tallying a 3-under 69 to tie for eighth. He also totaled six birdies and had a bogey-free back nine that included four birdie putts.
- Donohue, the reigning WCC Golfer of the Month, had a solid day on the course himself, turning in a team-high seven birdies as part of a 2-under 70 to tie for 18th.
- Odland is a stroke behind Donohue at 1-under 71 and tied for 27th.
- Little Rock edged the Broncos by one stroke (277) to claim the team lead for the opening round. Archie Smith (Little Rock) and Steen Zeman (Long Beach State) are tied for the individual lead at 6-under 66.
