Softball Pushes Win Streak to Seven Before Falling to Boise State at City of Trees Classic

BOISE, Idaho – The Santa Clara softball team extended their win streak to seven games with a 12-0 victory over St. Thomas in the first game before having the streak snapped by Boise State 8-0 in the afternoon contest at the City of Trees Classic tournament on Saturday.

Game 1: Santa Clara 12 - St. Thomas 0 (5)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Morgan Salmon homered twice and drove in a career-high five runs to lead an 11-hit offensive outburst by Santa Clara in the 12-0 five inning run-rule victory over the University of St. Thomas (4-23) to extend their win streak to seven games.
  • The Broncos got contributions up and down the line up - nine players scored a run, seven had a hit and six drove in a run.
  • Santa Clara (15-9) scored early and often against Tommies starter Morgan Klein, putting up seven runs in the second inning, a run in the third and four more runs in the fourth.
  • Leiora Davidson and Salmon each hit a home run in the second as SCU took advantage of three walks and two errors to push seven runs across.  Davidson hit a solo homer while Salmon had a three-run blast.
  • In the third, Cameron McGinnis, Bailey McLaughlin and Rebecca Rubio had three-straight singles through the left side to tack on another run.
  • Salmon's second home run, a two-run shot, in the fifth extended the Broncos lead to 10-0 with McGinnins and McLaughlin each adding an RBI single to make it 12-0.
  • Meanwhile, SCU starter Hannah Edwards (7-1) gave up just one hit and walked one over three innings to earn the win before giving way to Sage Hager in the fourth.  Hager tossed two scoreless innings.
  • Klein (0-3) took the loss, giving up eight runs, four earned, on six hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings.

Game 2: Boise State 8 - Santa Clara 0 (5)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Taylor Caudill tossed a four-hit shutout striking out seven Santa Clara batters along the way in Boise State's 8-0 run-rule win.  The loss snapped Santa Clara's (15-10) seven-game win streak, their longest since 2004.
  • After getting a run across in the bottom of the second on a SCU error, Sydney Groves added to that lead with a three-run home run in the bottom of the third against Santa Clara starter Alaina Valdez
  • Boise State (18-10) put up four more runs in the home half of the fifth with three of those runs coming on back-to-back home runs by Brooklynn Pettis and Groves off Sage Hager
