BOISE, Idaho – The Santa Clara softball team closed out the City of Trees Classic tournament with a split on Sunday, beating St. Thomas 10-2 before falling to host, Boise State, 10-3.
Game 1: Santa Clara 10 - St. Thomas 2 (6)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Santa Clara won 10-2 in six innings as the offense pounded out 14 hits while starter Avery Seva and Alaina Valdez combined to hold St. Thomas to two runs.
- Eight Santa Clara (16-10) starters got a hit led by Bailey McLaughlin who went 3-for-3 to extend her streak of safely reaching base to 10-straight plate appearances at the tournament. Hazyl Gray, Cameron McGinnis, Marie Martorella and Rebecca Rubio had two hits apiece. Cairah Curran and Morgan Salmon each drove in three runs.
- In the bottom of the second, McGinnis kick started the Bronco offense with a solo home run. SCU followed with three-straight singles by Martorella, Rubio and McLaughlin to load the bases and scored a pair of runs on St. Thomas (4-24) errors to give the Broncos a 3-0 advantage.
- Santa Clara batted around the order in the third to break the game open with five runs. Seven-straight batters reached base including four consecutive RBI singles by McLaughlin, Curran, Salmon & Abigail Charpentier to make it an 8-1 game.
- The Broncos tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth including Salmon's RBI grounder to push the lead out to eight runs and end the game in a run rule.
- Avery Seva (4-4) scattered seven hits and two runs over 4 1/3 innings and Valdez closed out the game tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
- Ella Cook pitched a 5 1/3 inning complete game to drop to 3-6. She also had a hit and an RBI for the Tommies.
Game 2: Boise State 10 - Santa Clara 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Boise State (19-10) scored seven runs on two home runs to power past Santa Clara 10-3 in the final game of the City of Trees Classic tournament.
- Pinch-hitter Leah McAnally hit a three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead as Boise State did not relinquish the lead the read of the game.
- Sydney Groves had a grand slam in the sixth to make it 10-3 in favor of Boise State.
- Santa Clara (16-11) got a solo home run from Taryn Clements in the top of the fourth to give SCU their first and only lead at 3-2 over Boise State this weekend but it was short lived as McAnally answered with a homer in the bottom of the frame.
- Bailey McLaughlin walked and singled in her first two plate appearances to extend her streak of safely reaching base at 12 plate appearances but was finally retired in the fourth inning on a fly out by starter Abbey Dowell.
- Dowell (5-2) gave up three runs, two earned on seven hits over five innings to pick up the win. She walked two and struck out three.
- Taylor Caudill threw two scoreless innings to earn the save.
- Hannah Edwards (7-2) was charged with the loss.

- Santa Clara will play their first non-tournament affiliated games, hosting Idaho State for a three-game series starting on Friday.
