Walk-Off Win Part of Two Softball Victories over Idaho State on Friday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball won both games of the doubleheader against Idaho State including on a walk-off in the second game. The Broncos took the first contest 6-3 and rallied from two runs down in the seventh inning in the back end game for a 4-3 victory. 

Game 1: Santa Clara 6 - Idaho State 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Hannah Edwards had a solid outing inside the circle tossing a complete game and three Broncos drove in two runs each in the 6-3 triumph.
  • At one point, Edwards retired 16 of 17 batters she faced including 10-straight after giving up a run in the opening frame. 
  • The right-handed hurler finished the game giving up three runs on seven hits and struck out five.  She did not issue a walk throwing an economical 87 pitches over 7 innings of work.
  • Santa Clara (17-11) had 11 hits in the game including four players with two hits each.
  • Idaho State (17-16) got on the board in the first inning when Gracie Smith led off the game with a double and scored on Olivia Robison's single.
  • The Broncos answered back with a run in the second and another in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead, both RBIs coming courtesy of Cameron McGinnis
  • In the fifth, SCU opened up the game up with four runs on a pair of 2-RBI base hits by Morgan Salmon and Leiora Davidson to push their lead out to 6-1.
  • The Bengals put up two runs in the seventh but Edwards (8-2) retired the final three batters to earn her eighth win of the season. 
  • Idaho State starter Riley Wickum (3-5) took the loss giving up two runs in four innings. 
  • Ava Brown had two hits for the Bengals. 

Game 2: Santa Clara 4 - Idaho State 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara (18-11) trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh but put together a two out rally including Morgan Salmon's walk-off hit to take the second game 4-3.
  • Facing Idaho State (17-17) starter Marley Goluskin who had allowed just one run on four hits through the first 6 2/3 innings, Cairah Curran started the Broncos rally drawing a walk.  Bailey McLaughlin then had a flare single down the left field line to put the potential game tying run on base.  Marie Martorella came into to pinch hit for Rebecca Rubio and doubled home Curran to cut the Bengals lead to 3-2.  Rubio re-entered the game as a pinch-runner replacing Martorella at second.  With runners in scoring position, Salmon delivered a clutch single to left scoring McLaughlin and Rubio as the Bengals left fielder, Ava Brown's throw to home was not in time.  
  • Hazyl Gray (1-4) who came in relief of starter Avery Seva threw four scoreless innings to pick up her first win of the season. 
  • Goluskin's (6-5) threw 117 pitches over 6 2/3 and suffered the loss.
