Williams' Extra-Innings Blast Clinches Series for Baseball

SEATTLE — They did it again.

Six wins this season for the Santa Clara University baseball team and all six have been of the come-from-behind variety. Saturday's edition took 15 innings to sort out, this time with Malcolm Williams coming through in the clutch with a leadoff solo home run in the top of the 15th, as the Broncos clinched a series win on the road over Washington of the Pac-12 Conference with a 3-2 win at Husky Ballpark.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Williams was 0 for 5 on the day entering his leadoff at-bat to start the 15th. He worked a 1-1 count, having seen a breaking ball earlier in the at-bat before launching the next one far over the left field wall for his third home run of the season.

  • It was the second time in the game the Broncos (6-3) had a clutch at-bat ahead of what could have been Washington's (2-5-1) final turn at bat. Jordan Lewis gave Santa Clara a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth with an RBI double. But the Huskies were able to scratch across a run in the bottom half to send it to extras, and they nearly won it. Aiva Arquette's game-tying double missed going over the fence by mere inches, and the next batter popped out to the pitcher.

  • It was Williams' batted ball in the seventh that was misplayed by UW third baseman Sam DeCarlo, bouncing under his glove and into left field to allow Ben Steck to score from second and tie the game at 1-1.

  • Washington took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a throwing error and a wild pitch, but Santa Clara starter Brandon Gomez was able to strand two runners and keep it a one-run ballgame. Gomez worked magically around trouble during his third outing of the year, stranding five runners in five innings – three in scoring position – and only allowing the one run.

  • The Broncos' bullpen showed up and showed out again Saturday, only allowing one run while totaling 12 strikeouts in 10 innings of work. Four pitchers – Jace Gillmore, Victory Martinez, Cade Pilchard and Max Bayles (3-0) – shared the workload, with Bayles earning his third win in as many weeks to start the season.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 0: The Broncos had zero hits with runners in scoring position Saturday, going 0 for 11 a day after batting .429 with six hits in the same scenario Friday.
  • 6: Santa Clara already has six come-from-behind wins in the first three weeks of the year. It had 19 in all of 2023, not earning their sixth comeback victory until the sixth week of the season.
  • 15: Williams' solo home run in the 15th inning extended his active hitting streak to 15 games dating back to last season. He's hit safely in all nine of the Broncos' games in 2024 after finishing the 2023 season with a six-game hitting streak.
