BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Santa Clara softball swept the midweek doubleheader against CSU Bakersfield behind strong performances by the pitching staff that allowed just two runs and four hits in two games as well as timely hitting. With the two victories, the Broncos have 20 wins on the season, the third-straight season in which they've reached that mark. The last time the program accomplished the feat was from 2004-06.
Game 1: Santa Clara 4 - CSU Bakersfield 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Two-way player Hazyl Gray dazzled with a one-hit complete game and safely reached base in three of four plate appearance including a pair of stolen base to help lead the Broncos to a 4-1 win in the first game of the doubleheader.
- Gray (2-4) was sensational inside the circle to the tune of career-high 10 strikeouts, walked two and gave up just one hit, a solo home run to Dani Hunter, in her seven innings of work.
- The southpaw hurler fanned eight different Roadrunner players and threw a total of 93 pitches.
- At the plate, Gray went 1-for-2 with a run, walked twice and stole two bases.
- Santa Clara (19-12) scored two runs each in the third and fourth innings.
- In the third, Morgan Salmon drove in two runs, her West Coast Conference leading 31st and 32nd RBI, on a single to plate Robynn Balmediano and Rebecca Rubio to put the Broncos up 2-0.
- The following inning, Balmediano delivered a 2-RBI single to double the Broncos lead.
- The lone run by the Roadrunners (2-25) came in the fifth on Hunter's solo home run.
- Kirsten Martinez gave up two runs in 4 2/3 innings to drop to 0-3 on the year. It was the 18th-straight loss for CSU Bakersfield.
- Santa Clara lineup did not strikeout once against Martinez and reliever Hunter.
- Broncos swiped a season-high tying six stolen bases.
Game 2: Santa Clara 4 - CSU Bakersfield 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Alaina Valdez and Hannah Edwards combined to hold CSU Bakersfield (2-26) to one run on three hits and the offense came up with 10 hits in the 4-1 Broncos victory in game two of the doubleheader.
- Valdez threw the first three innings, giving up a run and two hits before giving way to Edwards who tossed four scoreless innings to pick up her WCC leading ninth victory of the season. Neither pitchers walked a batter.
- Santa Clara (20-12) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Abigail Charpentier and a sacrifice fly by Hazyl Gray against the Roadrunners starter Anisa Reynolds.
- CSU Bakersfield (2-26) answered with a run in the third on Kaia Johnson's RBI double to trim the Broncos lead to 2-1.
- The Broncos responded in the top half of the fourth when Cameron McGinnis hit a home run with a runner on to push the lead out to 4-1. It was the second home run on the season for McGinnis.
- Edwards allowed just two batters to reach base, one on an error and another on a single after she entered the game in the bottom of the fourth.
- Robynn Balmediano went 3-for-3 and finished 5-for-5 on the day.
- Reynolds (0-8) pitched a complete game for the Roadrunner but suffered the loss in the 19th-straight defeat for CSU Bakersfield.
