SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara softball team recorded a sweep for the second day in a row, this time against Big 10 foe Iowa, to finish the Silicon Valley Classic II tournament undefeated at 4-0. The Broncos won the twin bill 4-2 and 3-2 against the Hawkeyes, a day after sweeping North Dakota State.
Game 1: Santa Clara 4 - Iowa 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Morgan Salmon's 2-RBI single in the fourth inning was the difference as Hannah Edwards came in relief to toss five shutout innings to lift Santa Clara (13-9) to a 4-2 victory.
- Edwards entered the game in the top of the third with runners at first and second and no out after Iowa (8-6) went ahead 2-1 on Soo-Jin Berry's RBI hit off starter Hazyl Gray. Edwards hit the first batter to load the bases but got Sammy Diaz to ground out into a double play and struck out Brylee Klosterman to get out of the inning unscathed.
- In the home half of the third, Leiora Davidson tied things up with an RBI grounder.
- Marie Martorella and Rebecca Rubio led off the fourth with singles and after moving into scoring position on Hazyl Gray's sacrifice bunt, they came home on Salmon's single.
- Edwards allowed just two hits and two walks in five innings and struck out three to improve to 6-1 on the season.
- Abigail Charpentier and Marie Martorella each had two hits. Davidson drove in two runs including a sacrifice fly in the third for the first Bronco run.
- Hawkeyes starter Jalen Adams gave up four runs on eight hits and two walks over four innings to drop to 4-3.
Game 2: Santa Clara 3 - Iowa 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Santa Clara (14-9) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead while Alaina Valdez and Avery Seva combined to allow two Iowa runs to hold onto a 3-2 win in the backend of the doubleheader.
- The Broncos opened the scoring in the second with a pair of unearned runs taking advantage of two Hawkeye errors. Cameron McGinnis had a sacrifice fly RBI in the inning.
- SCU added a run in the third on a double steal by Abigail Charpentier and Hazyl Gray with the latter stealing home.
- Iowa (8-7) cut into the Bronco lead with two runs in the fourth on a wild pitch by Valdez and an RBI double by Sammy Diaz.
- In four innings, Valdez (3-0) allowed three hits and two runs with one earned to get her second win in the tournament and third overall.
- Seva came in relief to start the fifth and allowed only one hit the rest of the way to earn her second save of the season.
- Hawkeyes pitchers Devyn Greer and Jaylee Ojo gave up three runs but none were earned as the Hawkeyes committed four errors in the game. Greer (2-3) was the losing pitcher of record.
