SANTA CLARA, Calif. – No. 54-ranked Santa Clara men's tennis team came up on the short end of a 4 hour 50 minute marathon match to LMU that snapped their nine-match win streak and dropped to 1-1 in the West Coast Conference. With the match all knotted at 3-all, it came down to singles line one where Arthur Pantino gritted out a three-set victory over No. 78-ranked Christian Lerby 7-6 (9-7), 6-7 (3-7), 7-5 to give the Lions a 4-3 victory on a sunny afternoon at the Degheri Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- LMU (9-7. 2-1 WCC) took two of the three doubles matches and won three of the four singles matches to prevail 4-3 in a tightly contested WCC battle.
- Sebastian Buxman and Lukas Maskow got Santa Clara (14-3, 1-1 WCC) off to a strong start with their 6-2 victory over Toky Ranaivo and Inig Diaz Ibarguengoi at doubles line two.
- After the Lions evened it out with a victory on line one, the doubles point came down to line three where Yassine Smiej and Max Wuelfing out lasted Luca Lemaitre and Tiago Boschmans 7-6 (14-12) to earn the crucial doubles point.
- LMU took the first singles match to go up 2-0 but the Broncos won the next two matches, at line four and line six.
- Buxman once again got the upper hand over Ranaivo 6-1, 7-5 as did Maskow with his 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory over Diaz Ibarguengoi to even the team score at 2-all.
- Max Wuelfing downed Alexander Watanabe Eriksson 6-4, 6-3 at line five regaining the upper hand for the Lions to go up 3-2.
- Guillaume Dalmasso battled to a three set triumph over Yassine Smiej 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 that leveled the match at 3-all to set the stage atop the singles lineup between Pantino and Lerby.
