SANTA CLARA, Calif. – No. 53 Santa Clara men's tennis and No. 13 San Diego battled in a rain affected West Coast Conference match that took two days to complete with the Toreros prevailing 4-0. The match began with a two hour rain delay on Thursday and was halted in the late afternoon, again due to rain, with San Diego up 3-0. It resumed on Friday morning and took six minutes to complete the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Neo Niedner clinched the win for San Diego (16-2, 3-0 WCC) on court six over Lukas Maskow 6-4, 6-3 to extend the Toreros win streak to seven matches and remain undefeated in league play.
- Niedner was ahead 5-3 and 15-all in the second set when play was halted at 5:40 p.m. on Thursday. When play resumed on Friday, Niedner won the first three points to secure the team victory.
- On Thursday, San Diego narrowly took the double point that look a little over one hour to complete. After the two teams split the first two doubles matches, Iiro Vasa and Sacchitt Sharrma edged out Guillaume Dalmasso and Christian 7-6 (7-4) on court one .
- The Toreros extended their lead to 3-0 on victories by Stian Klaasen on court five and Vasa, ranked No. 86 nationally, on court three.
- Santa Clara (14-4, 1-2 WCC) was ahead by a set on courts two and four and were on the verge of leveling things at one set apiece on court one but they went unfinished.
