Baseball Blows Out Pepperdine in Series Opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — That's one way to do it.

The Santa Clara University baseball team snapped a five-game skid Friday with a 9-1 blowout of Pepperdine in the teams' West Coast Conference series opener at Stephen Schott Stadium, a win that marked the Broncos' fifth consecutive win over the Waves and their largest in three years.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • All nine Broncos in the starting lineup had at least one base hit with five multi-hit performances, seven scored a run and six had RBIs. Santa Clara starter Brandon Gomez (2-1) struck out four in 5 2/3 innings to earn the victory, while Victor Martinez earned his fourth save of the season with five Ks in 3 1/3 innings of relief.

  • Santa Clara (16-15, 4-6 WCC) struck first in the opening frame with three runs in the bottom of the first. It was the first time it had scored multiple runs in the first inning since March 2 in a 5-2 win over Utah. An RBI double from Ben Steck, one of his career-high four hits in the game, and a two-run infield single from Jordan Lewis that deflected off the pitcher put the Broncos up, 3-0.

  • Pepperdine (12-22, 6-4 WCC) wasn't without its chances on Friday. It left at least one runner on base in eight of nine innings, with two left in three of those. The Waves went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position, and 3 for 19 (.158) with runners on base. Santa Clara left its share of runners on, too, with multiple runners stranded in four different innings. But it went 8 for 15 (.533) with runners in scoring position to score its eighth-most runs in a game this season.

  • Pepperdine's only run came on a bases loaded wild pitch from Martinez. It was Martinez's first pitch of his appearance after he relieved Gomez with two outs in the sixth. His very next pitch ended the inning on a groundout, stranding two more Waves in scoring position.

  • Waves starter Nick Bonn (0-3) only walked one against five strikeouts, but it was the 11 hits he surrendered that got him in trouble. Nine of the 11 hits he gave up were singles, as the Broncos went back up the middle or opposite field against him seven times. Steck, Michael O'Hara (2 for 5), Coleman Brigman (2 for 4), Malcolm Williams (2 for 3) and Ben Cleary (2 for 3) all had multi-hit games.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 6: O'Hara extended his season-long hit streak to six games Friday with two hits. It was his third multi-hit game during his streak. He's batting .360 during the streak that dates to March 30 at San Francisco.
  • 16: Santa Clara's 16 hits were its second-most in a game this season, only one behind the 17 they had at Arizona State on the second day of the season, Feb. 17.
