Late Goal Lifts No. 10 Women's Soccer

SANTA CLARA, Calif. –  A late goal lifted No. 10 Santa Clara women's soccer to an exciting 2-1 win over Washington Thursday night. The Broncos (4-1) got a first half lead but a goal midway through the second 45 pulled the Huskies (1-1-2) even. It took a goal with under four minutes left off a corner kick to seal the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first goal of the night came on a penalty kick by Marissa Vasquez in the 29th minute. She hit it low and inside the right post that beat the keeper who guessed correctly.
  • Things got tied in the 74th when Riley Brown found Samiah Shell who knocked the shot in far post.
  • The Broncos turned up the pressure after the game was tied but the game-winner didn't come until the 87th off of a corner kick after. Sally Menti sent the ball into the box and it found the head of Kat Jordan who finished inside the left post.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara held the edge in shots 17-7, including 13-4 in the second half, and 5-2 in shots on target.
  • The Broncos also drew seven corners while surrendering one.
  • Neither team made a save in the first half. Marlee Nicolos made one in second half for Santa Clara and Mia Hamant had three for the Huskies over the final 45 minutes.
