Men's Soccer Drops Road Contest Against UC Davis 2-1

DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis forward Keegan Walwyn-Bent scored two first half goals as the Aggies held on to defeat Santa Clara men's soccer 2-1 in a nonconference match on Saturday at Aggie Soccer Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • UC Davis (1-1-1) struck first in the 18th minute when Zack Lillington got the ball in the box on a partial clearance, sent it back into the middle from the left end line that Walwyn-Bent controlled and found the back of the net with his left foot.
  • Three minutes later Walwyn-Bent struck again in the 21st minute.  Andrew Dutra sent the ball from the right side across the box to the back post that Lillington headed to Walwyn-Bent who was waiting at the goal line and chested in to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead.
  • Just prior to halftime, Santa Clara (1-1) got themselves back into the game when junior Tyler Tipton skied to head in the ball on a beautiful long cross from Will Wiersdorf at the 39th minute mark.
  • The Broncos outshot the Aggies 16-11 in the game including 6-3 in the second half with three of them near equalizers.  Wiersdorf's shot from just inside the box in the 76th minute was parried by Aggies goalkeeper Noah Schwengeler as part of his five saves.  In the 84th minute, the Broncos had another near miss when Andrew Sullivan's free kick from 20 yards out hit the cross bar.  And just two minutes from the conclusion of the game, Jack Civitts' shot from a tough angle was barely tipped by Schwengeler as it rolled just past the outside post.
NOTABLE NUMBERS / GAME NOTES:
  • The series is now tied 4-4-3.
  • Freshman Quinn Garrett made his Bronco debut playing all 90 minutes.  Fellow freshmen Andrew Sullivan and Kai Hatten saw their first action of the season and played 18 and three minutes, respectively.
  • 6: Six of the Broncos starting XI played all 90 minutes.
  • 34: There were a total of 34 fouls with UC Davis committing 22 of them.
  • Walwyn-Bent had a game-high five shots while Wiersdorf led the Broncos with four.  Each player had a game-high two shots on goal.
HIGHLIGHTS:
POST-GAME COMMENTS:

Head Coach Cam Rast on the two conceded goals:
"Obviously that was the difference in the game.  After giving up the first goal, we didn't re-group like we needed to.  It was stuff we worked on all week with the wide cross and defending in the box but we didn't mark as well as we should've and we didn't clear it well either.  When you don't do it around the box, it leaves chances for teams to score.  It was deflating because we were in ok shape until that point."

On his biggest takeaways from the game:
"We got ahead of ourselves trying to do too much with the ball and turned the ball over.  And we weren't sharp in the moments when we needed to be.  If we were cleaner, maybe it would've been a 2-2 game which would've been a fair result.  Overall we grew into the game but we just need to be a little bit better throughout the 90 minutes and not have any lapses."

NEXT UP:
  • The Broncos fly out to the east coast for a pair of games starting with Fordham on Thursday.
