No. 11 Women's Soccer Battles No. 1 Stanford in Even Match But Falls 1-0

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Two of the top teams in the country played an even match but it was No. 1 Stanford that came away with a 1-0 win over No. 11 Santa Clara women's soccer on Sunday afternoon from Stevens Stadium. After a scoreless first half, the Cardinal (8-0) broke through early in the second half and held off a late charge by the Broncos (6-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A defensive miscue in the 55th minute led the first goal of the match for the Cardinal. Charlotte Kohler passed the ball Lizzie Boamah who took a touch to get around the defender and beat the goalkeeper low.
  • The Cardinal had another great chance on a breakaway later in the half but Malia Yamamoto came up with a huge block of the shot to keep in a one-goal game.
  • The Broncos offense created some chances throughout but stepped up for better ones late in the match. Santa Clara put three shots on frame over the last five and a half minutes and had a free kick sail just over the cross bar.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Both teams finished with eight shots and three on frame. Stanford earned four corner kicks to Santa Clara's two.
  • Marlee Nicolos made two saves with the Cardinal's Haley Craig making three.
