Wild First Half Gives No. 12 Women's Soccer Win Over Cal Poly

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A wild first half that saw seven goals scored led to a 4-3 win for No. 12 Santa Clara women's soccer over Cal Poly Sunday afternoon at home. The Broncos (6-1) scored two quick goals but the Mustangs responded (1-4-2) right back. Another lead for Santa Clara disappeared before the game-winner was scored late in the first half.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Kennedy Schoennauer had a brace less than seven minutes into the match with goals in the second and seventh minutes.
  • Cal Poly came back with goals in the 15th and 16th minutes.
  • Santa Clara went back on top on a goal from Shira Elinav, making it five total goals in the first 19 minutes.
  • The Mustangs evened things in the 30th but the Broncos got one more from Lauren Hinter in the 32nd to close out the scoring.
 
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara led in shots 27-7 and 12-7 in shots on goal. The Broncos defense held the Mustangs without a shot in the second half.
  • Santa Clara drew five corners in the match.
  • Marlee Nicolos made four saves and Mackenzie Samuel made eight for Cal Poly.
  • It was the third brace of the year for Schoennauer who leads the team with six goals.
  • The goal was the first of Elinav's Santa Clara career.
