Women's Basketball Picks Up Win Over San Diego

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball returned to Leavey Center after a three-game road trip with a 67-59 win over San Diego Saturday afternoon. The Broncos (9-9, 3-5 WCC) led most of the way despite the Toreros (4-11, 0-6 WCC) consistently coming back to make it close when it looked like they were done.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Santa Clara scored the first five points of the game and didn't trail in the first quarter. San Diego tied the game at 4:03 left in the first but wouldn't make another field goal in the period and the Broncos led 14-9 after the opening 10 minutes.
  • The lead stretched to nine early in the second, but the Toreros responded with a 9-0 run to even things up at 18-all. They would take their first lead of the game with just under three minutes to go in the half, but Santa Clara closed the second quarter on a 10-3 run to hold a 32-27 lead at the break.
  • The Toreros tied the game at 40 with 4:30 to go in the third quarter but wouldn't make another field goal the rest of the way. The Broncos took advantage closed the period on an 11-2 run, including the final nine of the period to hold a 51-42 lead heading into the fourth.
  • The two teams went back-and-forth the entire fourth with Santa Clara leading by at least seven the whole way. A 3-pointer by Olivia Pollerd with 1:33 left stretched the lead to a quarter-high 11.
 
NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara shot 50.0-precent from the field and went 2-of-8 from downtown.
  • San Diego shot at 31.9-precent and was 1-of-9 from beyond the arc.
  • Olivia Pollerd led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-16 shooting and added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Malia Latu added 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe. Kaya Ingram added nine with Maddie Naro chipping in eight and Alana Goodchild scoring seven.
  • Truitt Reilly led San Diego with 14 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Hallie Rhodes was the other Torero in double figures with 11.
 
OTHER NOTES:
  • Pollerd now has 1,064 career points at Santa Clara (1,071 in her career). That puts her 24th in Santa Clara history.
