Early Offense Leads Women's Soccer To Win

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's soccer got back in the win column with a 3-1 victory over Oregon State Saturday at home. The Broncos (6-6-2, 2-2-2 WCC) got on the board 60 seconds into the match and led by two less than five minutes into the action. The Beavers (2-8-4, 1-5 WCC) got one back late in the second half but that was as close as they would get.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A failed clearance by the Oregon State defense popped in the air and went right to the head of Raygen Lewis who headed it down to Kennedy Schoennauer. Schoennauer passed it right back to Lewis who hit it inside the far post right at the one-minute mark.
  • Mailin Orozco extended the lead in the fifth minute to 2-0. After getting the ball from Malia Yamamoto, Tessa Ferguson hit a long pass on the ground that got slid through the defense that Orozco ran down. She got to it just before the oncoming goalkeeper and touched it around before finishing in the empty net.
  • The lead was extended to 3-0 in the 20th minute. Hildi Benediktsdottir nutmegged a Beaver defender and sent a pass on the ground that Lia Henkelmann was able to knock into the back of the net.
  • Oregon State got their goal on a defensive miscue with 38 seconds left in the first half. A pass back to the keeper in close quarters didn't work and Nathalie Lewis got it to Isa Calderon who converted into the open goal.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara fired off a season-high 29 shots, including 20 in the second half, while also putting 10 shots on target. The Broncos also drew nine corners.
  • Eleven different Broncos got off a shot with Orozco and Leah O'Brien leading the way with seven each.
  • Oregon State had nine shots and put four on frame.
  • Ally Harrison made her collegiate debut and picked up the win while making one save.
  • Mya Sanchez made some big saves in net for the Beavers and finished the day with seven.
