Men’s Soccer Ends with Scoreless Draw at Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. – Santa Clara men's soccer fought to a scoreless draw against Gonzaga on Saturday night in a West Coast Conference contest at Luger Field.  There were a total of 12 shots in the game but neither team found the back of the net.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara (3-2-6, 0-0-2 WCC) finished with their fourth straight draw for the first time in program history.  They closed out the last two games of the nonconference slate with a draw and opened the first two WCC contests in the same fashion.
  • The Broncos were shorthanded for the final four minutes and change in the game when freshman defender Alejandro Arenas was given a red card but managed to keep the Zags off the scoring column.
  • In a scoreless first half, each team had pair of shots with one on frame.  Late in the half, Simon Diagana slipped behind the defense and had the lone shot on goal for the Broncos but was turned away by Chema Preciado.
  • Gonzaga (3-4-2, 0-1-1 WCC) turned things up in the second half outshooting the Broncos 7-1.  They had one of their best scoring chances in the 81st minute on a blast from Ethan Doud that Broncos goalkeeper Jackson Ozburn had to dive to make a save.
  • Ozburn, a Sammamish, Washington native, returned to his home state to record his fifth clean sheet of the season.  Preciado had his third shutout of the season.
NOTABLE NUMBERS / GAME NOTES:
  • Santa Clara leads the all-time series 26-10-7 and extended their unbeaten streak in the series to nine matches (5-0-4).
POST-GAME COMMENTS:

Head Coach Cam Rast's thoughts on the game:
"It was obviously a conference game and Gonzaga had lost last weekend and being at home today, they needed to get something out of it.  And to their credit, they were organized and physical.  A couple of yellow cards were issued against them early on which slowed things down a bit.  We had a good chance late in the opening half when Simon (Diagana) got behind the defense and struck the ball well but their keeper had a nice save.  Aside from that, we just stalled in the final third and we're not creating the moments to unlock things with passes that give us a chance to score and that's our challenge.  Defensively, we did fairly well especially when they served it into the box.  It was a tough one today as we weren't clicking on all cylinders and we just need to be more clinical and it brings into focus on what we need to work on."
