Women's Soccer Draws With Seattle in Wild Match

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Playing at home for the first time in almost a month, Santa Clara women's soccer fell behind early and came back twice for a 3-3 draw against Seattle Saturday afternoon. The Redhawks (4-2-5, 0-2-1 WCC) scored twice in the opening 10 minutes and were up by one at the half before the Broncos (5-4-2, 1-0-2 WCC) tied things up. Seattle took the lead once again with Santa Clara having another answer. Both teams pushed for the winner and created chances but neither could break the tie.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first goal came in the third minute when the ball pinballed just outside the box and bounced to Kyla Schuster in the box where she knocked it in.
  • Seattle scored again in the 10th. Marla Gauditz got her first shot inside the six-yard box blocked but converted on the rebound that came right back to her.
  • Leah O'Brien got Santa Clara back into the match with the Broncos first goal in the 30th minute. O'Brien got the ball with her back to the goal inside the six-yard box and turned to convert inside the near post. Adee Goulden and Addie Whitehouse had the assists.
  • Right out of halftime, the Broncos evened things at 2-all. Lia Henkelmann slipped a pretty pass through to Mailin Orozco who took a few touches and beat the keeper far post. O'Brien also had an assist on the goal.
  • The Redhawks came back in the 56th to get back on top. Caroline Penner hit a blast from outside the box that bounced and got into the back of the net.
  • Kennedy Schoennauer responded in the 69th for the final tally of the day. Jalana Kimber got to a bad pass and knocked it to Schoennauer who ran past two defenders and hit a shot far post from just inside the box.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • Santa Clara finished the day with 12 shots while putting six of them on frame.
