Women's Basketball Cruises Past Wyoming

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A huge first half run created some distance and Santa Clara women's basketball never looked back in a 76-45 win over Wyoming Friday night from Leavey Center. The Broncos (3-1) started cold but rattled off 26 points in a row at one point in the first half and their defense suffocated the Cowgirls (1-3) to cruise to the victory.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Both teams started cold from the field and exchanged baskets for a while with Wyoming building an 11-8 lead at the 2:15 mark of the first quarter. Santa Clara turned it on from that point on and scored the final eight points of the period to take a 16-11 lead at the end of the period.
  • Things continued in the second, with Santa Clara scoring the first 18 points of the period to take a 34-11 lead. In all, it was a 26-0 run over 11:29. The Cowgirls got their only points of the period on a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left in the period and the Broncos were on top 34-14 at the break.
  • Wyoming cut into the deficit and got within 15 early in the third quarter and again later in the period but Santa Clara scored 14 in a row and closed the period on 1n 18-2 run that saw them up 60-29 headed to the fourth.
  • With the game already all but over, a 15-2 run for the Broncos put them up a game high 35 points late in the fourth.
 
NOTABLE:
  • Santa Clara shot 42.1-percent (32-of-76) from the field while going 6-of-20 from beyond the arc. Sophie Glancey and Ava Schmidt both scored 13 to lead the Broncos' balanced attack. Freshmen Tyler Gildersleeve-Stiles (11 points, a career-high/10 rebounds) and Delainey Miller (10 points, tying a career-high /10 rebounds, a career-high) both had double-doubles with Glancey just missing with nine rebounds. Ashley Hawkins a season-high eight assists and for the second game in a row Glancey was one off her career high with five blocks.
  • With her bucket at 7:03, Glancey reaching 1,500 points for her collegiate career.
  • Wyoming shot 35.7-percent from the floor and was 4-of-17 from beyond the arc.
  • Malene Pederson was the only Cowgirl in double-figures with 16. Madi Symons scored eight and Lana Beslic had a team high eight rebounds.
  • Santa Clara won the battle of the boards 50-32 and was 19-4 on the offensive glass. It led to a 15-2 advantage in second chance points for the Broncos.
  • Santa Clara's bench outscored the Wyoming reserves 35-14 and the Broncos led 52-22 in points in the paint.
