Second Half Comeback Falls Short for Women's Basketball Against Arizona State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A second half comeback came up just short for Santa Clara women's basketball in an 82-77 defeat to Arizona State on Sunday afternoon. The Broncos (3-2) were down 13 at the half but fought all the way back but the Sun Devils (4-0) were able to get back on top and hold on for the win.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Back-to-back 3-pointers by Ashley Hawkins and Ava Schmidt gave Santa Clara its first lead midway through the first. After a triple from Aniya Hooker tied things up, Arizona State went on a 9-0 run and held a 26-19 lead after the quarter. The Sun Devils went 10 of their last 13 during the period while the Broncos closed the quarter 1-for-6.
  • Six misses in a row led to a 9-0 run for Arizona State that put Santa Clara down 35-22 with six minutes left in the half. Later in the second, the Sun Devils went on a 7-0 run with five of the points coming from the free throw line to grow their lead out to 18 with two minutes to go. The Broncos scored the final five of the half, capped by Maia Jones' 3-pointer with nine seconds to go, to go into the break down 50-37.
  • Arizona State cooled off to start the second half, missing five shots in a row at one point, and Santa Clara took advantage with a 9-0 run that got the Broncos within 54-51 at the midpoint of the quarter. The quarter would end with the Sun Devils on top 62-57.
  • The scoring in the fourth was back-and-forth with Arizona State getting on top by as many as eight with 6:29 to go. Maia Jones hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to two and after a jumper for the Sun Devils, Ashley Hawkins and Ava Schmidt's back-to-back layups tied the game at 3:14. With Arizona State up four, Jones hit another triple to make it a one-point game. The Sun Devils scored on their next possession to make it a 3-point game, but the Broncos missed the game tying 3-pointer and Arizona State put it away with a pair of free throws.
 
NOTABLE:
  • Santa Clara shot 38.4-percent from the field while going 14-of-44 from beyond the arc. The 44 3-pointers attempted were the most in a game in program history.
  • Jones led the Broncos with 20 points while knocking down five 3-pointers. Ashley Hawkins scored 18 with six assists and Sophie Glancey had 18 points had eight rebounds. Aniya Hooker also cracked double figures with 10 points and four assists.
  • Arizona State shot it at 46.2-percent (30-of-65), including 59.4-percent (19-32) in the first half when they built their lead, and went 3-of-9 from downtown.
  • M Brackens scored 23 points on 9-of-12 from the free throw line and had 11 rebounds for the double-double. Gabby Elliott also had a double-double with 20 points and 16 rebounds with Last-Tear Poa scoring 14 and Marley Washenitz adding 11.
  • Arizona State finished the day 19-of-25 from the free throw line with Santa Clara going 7-of-11.
  • The Broncos collected 18 assists with just 11 turnovers.
