Box Score SAN DIEGO – A hot start lifted Santa Clara women's basketball to a 72-47 win at San Diego State on Wednesday. A huge day from
Maia Jones helped the Broncos (4-2) build a double-digit lead by the end of the first and the Aztecs (3-2) couldn't get the offense going as they struggled all day from the field.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Santa Clara got off to a quick start and took the lead for good less than two minutes into the game. With the Broncos up three, they went on an 8-0 run to close the first quarter and were on top 17-6 after one period.
- San Diego State started the second quarter with a triple that cut the deficit to eight, but Santa Clara came right back with three consecutive 3-pointers and wouldn't see the lead dip below double figures again. During the second, the Broncos also had runs of 10-0 and 7-0 and went into the halftime break on top 45-17.
- Jones scored five in a row to put her team up by 30 for the first time midway through the third and her jumper with 3:51 in the period stretched the lead to a game high 33. Santa Clara would lead 60-28 headed to the fourth.
- The Aztecs had their best quarter in the fourth, scoring 19 points and cutting in the deficit a bit but it was too little too late.
