Women's Basketball Dominates in Season Opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – A new era began for Santa Clara women's basketball with a bang in a 108-52 win over Stanislaus State Monday night in the season opener and the first game as head coach for Loree Payne. The Broncos (1-0) showed off their up-and-down style of play right away and built a big lead that the Warriors (0-0) were never meaningfully able to cut into.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Broncos came out shooting and after a 7-0 run during the middle part of the first quarter, the lead went to double figures for the first time at the 5:34 mark at 15-4. Another 7-0 run made it a 22-6 advantage, and the first quarter ended with Santa Clara on top 26-9.
  • The first 10 points of the second quarter went to the Broncos, highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers. Kylee Fox hit two triples in a row to start a 14-0 run over 2:14 that gave the Broncos a 52-13 lead. The lead would remain 39 at the half with Santa Clara up 57-18.
  • The lead continued to grow throughout the third quarter with the biggest Broncos' run being a 7-0 stretch. At the end of the period Santa Clara was on top 91-34.
  • Stanislaus State made a bit of run with eight points in a row midway through the fourth quarter, but the lead remained 103-50. The Broncos' offense was cold during the period, shooing just 4-of-18 from the field. They missed their final nine attempts and didn't connect from the floor for the final 5:15.

NOTABLE:
  • Santa Clara shot 44.7-percent (38-of-85) from the floor and was at 34.9-percent (15-of-43) from beyond the arc. The only blemish was a 17-of-30 mark from the free throw line.
  • Kylee Fox led the way with 18 points of 7-of-12 shooting and 4-of-5 from downtown while adding seven rebounds and four assists. Ashley Hawkins scored 16 and grabbed eight boars with six assists while Maia Jones (14 points), Sophie Glancey (11 points), and Kate Schat (11 points) were also in double figures. Tyler Gilder-Sleeve Stiles had a double-double (10 points/11 rebounds) with Delainey Miller scoring eight with 11 boards as well. Sienna Greiger added eight points also.
  • Of the 11 players to see minutes, 10 scored at least four points.
  • The Broncos picked up 31 assists on their 38 made field goals and had 11 turnovers for a 2.8 assist-to-turnover ratio.
  • Santa Clara won the battle of the boards 61-38 and pulled down 26 offensive rebounds for a 27-10 edge in second chance points.
  • The Broncos also had a 45-22 advantage in bench points and a 51-4 edge in fastbreak points.
  • The team's 15 3-pointers were tied for the most in program history in Leavey Center.
  • Stanislaus State shot 30.0-percent (20-of-66) from the field and 18.2-percent (2-of-11) from downtown.
  • Aaliyah Dias scored 14 to lead the Warriors and MilaSarai Tau scored 11. Cameron Gibson had a team leading nine rebounds.
