Women's Basketball Tops Hawaii

HONOLULU – Santa Clara women's basketball closed out its time at the American Savings Bank Rainbow Wahine Showdown with a 76-57 win over host Hawaii. The Broncos (7-3) built a double-figure lead after the first quarter and never allowed the Rainbow Wahine (4-3) to get back into the game.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A 15-2 run, including a stretch of 10 points in a row, over nearly six minutes in the first quarter saw Santa Clara build its lead out to 11. The Broncos would hold a 20-8 lead after the opening period.
  • Things were more even in the second with Hawaii getting as close as 20-13 early in the quarter. The Broncos would get the lead up to 14 with a 6-0 run but the Rainbow Wahine had a 6-0 run of their own in the tank to cut their deficit to eight. Santa Clara was on top 35-25 at the half.
  • Hawaii scored six points in a row in the middle part of the third quarter to get within 37-33 at the 5:30 mark. The Broncos regrouped and answered with an 8-0 run, featuring back-to-back 3-pointers by Kylee Fox and Ava Schmidt, to push the lead back out to 12 and would lead 56-43 heading into the final quarter.
  • The Broncos scored the first eight of the fourth and started the period with a 15-2 run to take. A game-high lead of 26-points. Hawaii came back with an 8-0 run to get the deficit to 18 but that was as low as it would get in the waning minutes.
 
NOTABLE:
  • Santa Clara shot 36.4-percent (28-of-77) from the field and went 11-of-34 from beyond the arc.
  • Sophie Glancey led all scorers with 19 points and pulled down 12 boards for her second double-double in four games. Fox tied her season high with 18 points and knocked down four 3-pointers to go with six rebounds. Maia Jones added 15 points and five assists as well.
  • Hawaii shot 38.2-percent (21-of-55) from the floor while going 6-of-13 from downtown.
  • Bailey Flavell was the lone Hawaii player in double-figures with 10 points and added six rebounds. Izzy Forsyth and Imani Perez both scored nine with Perez pulling down a team-high eight boards.
  • Santa Clara forced 24 turnovers while committing just six. This allowed the Broncos to post a 28-2 advantage in points off turnovers.
  • Santa Clara had a 12-2 advantage in second chance points.
  • The Broncos also had a 25-6 edge in fast break points.
  • Glancey was named to the All-Tournament team.
