Women's Basketball Cruises To Historic Saturday Win

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's basketball had a historic game with a 125-43 win over Simpson Saturday afternoon in Leavey Center. The Broncos (8-3) set a program record for points in a game and scoring margin while blowing out the Red Hawks (4-2).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Santa Clara used a 16-0 run early in the first quarter to all but put the game away with a 21-4 lead. A 19-2 run late in the period ballooned the lead out to 31 with the Broncos on top 43-13 after one period.
  • The Broncos slowed down a bit in the second but still had two 7-0 runs and a 6-0 run as well. The 6-0 run came at the end of the quarter as Aniyah Hooker and Sienna Grieger both hit 3-pointers to send Santa Clara into the locker room up 66-25.
  • The Broncos continued to pour it on in the third and had a 16-2 stretch midway through the quarter. They also finished the period on an 8-0 run that saw them lead 96-34.
  • With program records on the line in the fourth, Santa Clara came out and scored the first 12 points of the quarter with Ava Schmidt scoring the first seven. An 11-2 stretch followed and Tyler Gildersleeve-Stiles scored the team's final six points to close out the 82-point victory.
 
NOTABLE:
  • Santa Clara shot 47.3-percent (44-of-93) from the field and went 12-of-45 from downtown. The Broncos were also 24-of-29 from the free throw line. The 93 field goal attempts were second in program history and the 45 3-pointers attempted were first. The 44 field goals made tied for third most in program history.
  • Maia Jones (22 points/13 rebounds), Delaney Miller (15 points/13 rebounds), and Tyler Gildersleeve-Stiles (15 points/10 rebounds) all had double-doubles for Santa Clara. It was the first career double-double and a career high in rebounds for Jones, a career high in points and rebounds for Miller, and a career high in points for Gildersleeve-Stiles.
  • Kylee Fox had a season high 20 points, one off her career mark, with Ava Schmidt adding 14 points and Ashley Hawkins scoring 13. Schmidt tied her career high with four blocks and added six boards with Hawkins dishing out six assists. Hooker set a career high with five steals as well.
  • Santa Clara won the turnover battle 28-9 and had an incredible 48-5 advantage in points off turnovers. The 20 steals tied a program mark done four times before, the most recent February 20, 2016 vs. Pepperdine.
  • The Broncos also on the battle of the boards 69-24 and 33-7 on the offensive end which gave them a 41-4 edge in second chance points.
  • The Santa Clara bench outscored Simpson's 50-6.
  • The Bronco also held a 60-18 advantage in points in the paint and a 45-5 edge in fastbreak points.
  • Santa Clara dished out 28 assists on the day.
  • All 10 Broncos that suited up played at least 18 minutes, scored, had a field, had a rebound, and had an assist. Eight had a steal and seven made a 3-pointer.
  • Simpson shot it at just 25.9-percent (14-of-54) and went 3-of-11 from beyond the arc.
  • Anna Marshall was the lone Red Hawk to crack double figures with 11 points. Monet Dunham scored nine with Moriah Bowles grabbing a team high eight boards.
