Women's Basketball Pulls Away Late at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX – Santa Clara women's basketball led most of the way and rallied late for a 91-72 win at Grand Canyon on Sunday afternoon. The Broncos (9-3) created some distance multiple times throughout the game, but the Lopes (1-9) kept responding until the fourth quarter when the game was put away.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Santa Clara built a seven-point lead midway through the first quarter before Grand Canyon came back with an 8-2 run to get within one. Sophie Glancey led a 9-0 Broncos run with six points to get the lead out to 10 and her team would hold a 27-20 lead after one.
  • The Lopes came out how in the second and scored the first eight points to briefly take a 28-27 lead. After exchanging buckets, Maia Jones' free throw with 3:36 left in the period put the Broncos back on top for good. Santa Clara was cold from the floor in the quarter and made just one field goal over the final 5:23 but made up for it with nine free throws. Grand Canyon took advantage and was only down 42-41 at the break thanks to shooting 60.0-percent (15-of-25) from the field during the half.
  • It was Santa Clara's turn to start a quarter hot as the Broncos scored the first 12 points of the second half to build a 54-41 lead. The Lopes responded later in the period with nine in a row of their own to get within 59-56 and the Broncos would hold a 65-60 lead heading into the fourth.
  • After Grand Canyon got within three at 7:58 mark of the fourth, Santa Clara went on a 15-2 run to create some distance. Another 7-0 run later in the quarter ballooned the lead out to 20 for the first time and put away any doubt.

NOTABLE:
  • Santa Clara shot 43.3-percent (29-of-67) from the floor and 8-of-26 from deep. The Broncos went an impressive 25-of-27 from the free throw line as well.
  • Sophie Glancey scored a season high 29 points, one off her career high, on 8-of-15 shooting from the field and a perfect 13-of-13 from the free throw line while adding eight rebounds as well. Her 13 made free throws tied her career high set last season against Montana. It was also just the fifth time in program history a Bronco was perfect from the free throw line with at least 13 attempts. The record is 15 accomplished twice (Tess Heal 2/16/23 and Melissa King 12/16/91). King also went 14-for-14 (11/23/91). Glancey tied Nici Gilday (1/2/14).
  • Ashley Hawkins scored 14 and just missed a double-double with a season best nine assists. Ava Schmidt and Kylee Fox both scored 11 with Maia Jones and Delainey Miller chipping in 10 apiece. Jones also had a career-high-tying six steals.
  • Grand Canyon shot 47.2-percent (25-of-53) from the field and was 6-of-18 from beyond the arc. The Lopes also went 16-of-21 from the charity stripe.
  • Chloe Mann scored 29 on 10-of-15 shooting from the field but the Broncos caused her to commit nine turnovers while allowing her just one assist. Holly Griffiths, Karley Johnson, and Anisa Jeffries all added eight points each.
  • Santa Clara forced 23 turnovers and had 13 steals which turned into 26 points.
  • The Broncos also had a 12-4 edge in second chance points thanks to a 12-6 advantage on the offensive glass. They also won the battle of the boards overall, 38-34.
